We want you know that your generosity is appreciated and that we would not have some of these stories to share if it were not for your gift to Mulgrave. As a community of parents all focussed on providing our children with the very best education we possibly can, there is little we cannot accomplish when we set our sights high. The West Wing and the accompanying refurbishing of the Junior School classrooms is one of those achievements, and the impact that the new spaces are having is already creating a palpable, positive impact both on our students’ learning and our teachers’ teaching.
I know that you have many choices when it comes to deciding where to direct your philanthropic dollars. Many of you are active members on governing boards, steering panels, and gala and fundraising committees for nonprofit organisations that do important work both locally and globally. Many of you also support these groups, including Mulgrave, with your time and money. By doing so, you model the importance of social responsibility and take action in caring for the welfare and the future of the society in which we live. Thank you for helping us set an example for our young Mulgravians. Through service to others, we hope to instil in them a sense of responsibility and provide them with a way to gain perspective in order to develop a greater appreciation for the lives that they lead, lives full of opportunity and promise. It is that promise that keeps me motivated to continue to push the limits of what we think an excellent education can be. WE ST WING On December 20, 2018 our new West Wing opened its doors to the community. Home to the Middle School, Early Years Centre, and our new Art and Design Studios, the West Wing extension is a beautiful and functional addition to our campus. Taking just 18 months to complete, it is because of the dedication of our community who, as they have throughout Mulgrave’s history, came together to support our fundraising campaign to raise $12m. L E A DING BY EXAMP LE If Jelena and Russell put a pin on the map for every place in the world they’ve lived or visited, they’d need several boxes. Growing up in middle-class families in South Africa and Serbia respectively, both travelled independently before meeting at a hostel in Prague 16 years ago. They ended up together in New York City, where they lived and worked before putting their (professional) lives on hold to backpack around the world. Returning from that life-altering trip three years later and looking to settle and start a family, the couple decided to make Vancouver their home. As their children grow, it’s become exceptionally important to Jelena and Russell that their kids, Gabi (5) and Natali (3), develop a good understanding of the world and their place in it. “Our kids are growing up in a bubble, so finding a school that would help us to help them burst that bubble and be globally aware was a priority.” Mulgrave shared that belief and for Jelena and
Russell, the decision to come to Mulgrave was one that just felt ‘right’. Through their travels, they saw first-hand what giving can do in developing countries. “Money simply goes a lot further in the third world, in the countries where we were born and raised, and by supporting organisations like Doctors Without Borders we’re able to help those who didn’t win the birthright lottery.” But as important as they feel it is to give to not-for-profits focussed on immediate needs (the ‘cure’ piece), they believe that investing in long-term solutions (the ‘prevention’ piece) is also critical, and supporting Mulgrave is one of the ways they have chosen to do that. Russell explains that he used the same process to make the decision to donate to the MPower campaign as he would with any other investment. “We knew that Mulgrave had what we were looking for in a school, and

ultimately you need to trust the people that you invest with to be good stewards of your capital. By supporting our young people now, we are both sprinkling seeds and nourishing those seeds to grow into individuals who will hopefully change our society, whether by finding cures for diseases, combatting societal issues, or by building successful enterprises that allow them to then fund additional causes. By supporting the school, we are helping to develop those young saplings.� Jelena and Russell want their children to grow up knowing that Vancouver is just one pin on the map, that there is a big world out there, and that they have a duty to use their privilege to make it a better place. On all fronts, Jelena and Russell are leading by example.

As much as I love knowing that MPower has funded the West Wing extension where my son Sebastian has classes with extraordinary views and even shares his love of music with his peers through morning DJ sessions in the Middle School Academic Centre, I didn’t contribute to the campaign just for him. I decided to donate because I work with an incredibly amazing and inspiring group of teachers, and I believe the new spaces are well-designed and fitted with bespoke furniture and accessories, allowing them to do their best work. As teachers, we feel it is important to support the communities around us. By donating to the MPower campaign, we feel that we contributed in some manner to the success and future of our school community. It’s more than our employer or just our school. As teachers and parents in the community, Mulgrave is a large part of our life and what contributes to our children’s upbringing. By contributing to MPower, we feel that we are fostering further success and opportunities for our community.

Choosing to give to the MPower campaign was an easy decision to make. The teaching community and parent community are working together in support of the same goal: creating and lifting our students to be the best they can be in the best environment that we could provide. I wanted to contribute as my part in supporting my students, so giving to the campaign was just one way I could do so.
STU DENT GEN EROSITY Sahra K-L (G11) has been at Mulgrave since Kindergarten and considers the school to be her second home. Over the years, Sahra has been involved in activities from every strand. “I’ve been in theatre productions and choir, played volleyball and basketball, travelled with Duke of Edinburgh, and I currently volunteer with MERT, sit on the Athletics Council, and cochair Mulgrave’s World Partnership Walk,” she explains. And while Sahra is one busy teenager, she takes time to pause and appreciate what she has, as well as ponder the opportunities she has to get involved. It was that sort of reflection that prompted her to forgo birthday purchases and donate her gift money to the MPower campaign. “My parents have invested a lot in my education, and I feel thankful that I have the opportunity to give back,” says Sahra. “I know it’s not a big contribution, but even if it’s a single window pane, I will know that I did something to help with our learning.” This isn’t the first time that Sahra has been generous with the school. “I did the same thing in Grade 6 or 7 with the Imagine Campaign for the Senior School. I knew I’d be in that space in just a few years, so I wanted to help create a place that we could all use to excel!” But Sahra’s gifts go far beyond wanting to better the spaces she and her friends enjoy. “Since I was young, my parents have taught me that giving and volunteering at school and in our local and religious communities is really important. We get so much from those places, and we need to give back. I have gotten so much from Mulgrave, so this is one way I can contribute.” When asked about her post-graduation aspirations, Sahra says she’s not quite sure yet. She’s thinking business or economics (and a seat on the Mulgrave Alumni Committee!)...we’re quite certain that whatever she pursues, she’ll lead with her warm heart and admirable values.
I N VEST I N ED UC ATI O N , I N VEST I N OUR KI DS ’ F U TU R E Four years ago, when David Liu and Lili Hao began to look for private schools in Vancouver for their two children, they had three criteria in mind: co-ed so the children could stay together, an IB curriculum, and the opportunity to study Mandarin as a second language. Mulgrave not only ticked all three boxes, but many more that the family didn’t at first prioritise. It has become not just a school to them but a community where they spend time getting to know others through family barbeques, playdates, and weekend gatherings with other parents; they have become part of the Mulgrave community in ways that they never imagined. It is this sense of community that helped the Liu family make the decision to support the MPower campaign. “I knew from my first interview with Admissions that if we were accepted, we would do our best to help school in any way that we could.” Last year, David and Lili decided to take their support even further and increase their gift to make an even greater impact. They have always made annual donations to support organisations close to their hearts and decided to consolidate their giving to make one larger contribution. “It is important to support our school; it is our duty as parents to make the school a better place for our kids. Giving to education is an investment, and it is a most profitable one because we invest in our kids’ future. Their future leads to a better world.”

As a member of the Planning and Grounds Committee, you give so much of your time to Mulgrave. Why is it important to you to stay connected to the school even after your son has graduated?
The Hoegg Family has unique, multi-generational ties to Mulgrave. Jay Lynne became a Mulgrave parent when her son joined in 2004 as a Grade 3 student and now, almost 15 years later, her sister Joey has a son who has also joined Grade 3. Grandparents of these Mulgravians, Jo Lynne and her late husband John, instilled a respect for education in their daughters and grandchildren, which has now been honoured in a very special way.
Jay Lynne: Mulgrave gave my son the best grounding for life that I could have imagined, and I am truly grateful for that. I sincerely believe that the school lives up to all of its commitments to parents and individually guides each student within their paths. When you find something you believe in, you do your best to support it and give back if you can.
Having all contributed to MPower in many ways, the family shares why giving is important to them.
You have a deep-rooted family tree here at the school, can you describe how you are connected to Mulgrave? Jay Lynne: I discovered Mulgrave when the school was just moving to its current campus. When my son’s small private school in North Van closed, Mulgrave did an amazing thing and accepted a huge number of students into their school MJ started in Grade 3 with at least 20 of his classmates whom he had been with since Kindergarten. Many of them graduated from Mulgrave and are still friends to this day. Mulgrave became part of our lives, early mornings, late evenings; the school was always there for him. Academics, sports, events, Mulgrave became part of our family. Now, my sister has her son CJ in the school - coincidentally also starting in Grade 3!
Why did you also choose to support the MPower Campaign? Jay Lynne: My husband and I believe in the continued expansion and long term vision for the school. Expansion helps to provide the next generation with even more of the ‘hard asset’ opportunities that we could only have imagined in the earlier years.
Jo Lynne, your support helped to build our incredible new outdoor classroom in memory of your late husband. Can you share why you decided to honour him in this way? Jo Lynne: The North Shore, and especially West Vancouver, was meaningful for John. We moved to West Van in 1966, when John became President of Grouse Mountain Resorts. He always expressed an appreciation for the majestic views from Grouse and from our home...to the ocean and the islands…for the extraordinary natural environment. Thus, an outdoor site, especially providing views of the ocean and islands seemed most appropriate. As well, and as importantly, he had great respect for the power of learning. The Outdoor Classroom was ideal.
Joey, you are a new parent at the school, what made you decide to support the MPower campaign right away? Joey: Within a few short weeks of being at the school, I could see the difference it was making in my son’s educational development. I understand that the quality of the experience offered at Mulgrave is not easy to achieve and takes significant resources. I have seen the wonderful things Mulgrave has done for my nephew MJ over the years, and I’m excited that my son CJ will have those same opportunities.
You’ve been connected to Mulgrave through your family over the years, but now that you are parent here, can you describe a highlight or special moment from this school year? Joey: There have been many special moments already. I recall one in March when my son’s Grade 3 class performed at the Friday assembly. They presented a short play about Canada that they had written as a class. I was so impressed by the effort they put in and the level of material they were able to share with the school. The confidence and stage presence were also remarkable. Perhaps what was most exciting was that the children became curious to learn more about their country. As a direct result of that Unit of Inquiry, my son and I are planning a trip to the Atlantic provinces.
What is it about Mulgrave that you feel is special? All: EVERYTHING! One specific - the way the founding concepts, philosophy, and drive for excellence continue to be so clear and well maintained as the years pass. I truly hope that the school never loses that amazing ability to make each of us (parent or student) feel special, too.

A WH O L E NEW REALITY Imagine a world in which anything is possible...3D mountain peaks, lush valleys, or concrete jungles, whatever is in your mind’s eye can become a reality. Grade 11 student, David Z, does just that every time he puts on the Virtual Reality (VR) headgear in our new Upper School Art and Design Centre.
VR design has come a long way in the past decade and predictions make it a $40 billion industry in the next few years. For students like David, who have a love of both art and design, advances in this technology have him poised for a career in interactive media, entertainment, or game design. David has always been captivated by VR’s ability to tell a story and create community, but it wasn’t until his art teacher, Alina Ianovskaia, suggested that he try loading his 2D and 3D artwork into the VR system that he realised that this could be a career path for him. The Art and Design Centre gives students like David the space they need to create. From laying out design plans on the work tables to having the space to maintain the VR set-up at all times, students are able to design without limitation. “Every time I used the VR set before we moved into the West Wing, I would dig it out from behind photography lights and stands of ceramic artwork.” In the new space, the VR system has a designated area that is always ready for wherever students’ imaginations will take them.
M O RE S PACE, MORE VAR I E T Y, MORE P LAY! Perhaps the biggest impact of our new West Wing is on the littlest of our Mulgravians. Coming from the old ELC building where the classes were split between two floors and outdoor space was limited, the new interconnected classrooms have transformed the experience for our PK3s and PK4s.

Whether it be the ‘round room’ which provides a large enough space to host new after school clubs, or the playground where all classes can play at the same time, children experience spaces that are both inclusive and fun. It’s not only our students that are excited about the new Early Years (EY) Centre. The teachers, who had a hand in planning the space, have seen a tremendous improvement in their ability to engage students and facilitate activities. More play stations throughout the larger classrooms provide children with variety and time for the activities that they love most.
E R ASA B L E MISTAK ES, P ER M A N EN T L EA R N I N G It’s not only on CSI that deep thinking and revelations come from the scribes and scrawls on glass ‘whiteboards’. Mediums like this inspire brainstorming, collaboration, and risk taking - it’s erasable. Translate that thinking into Rob Eakin’s new West Wing Middle School math classroom, and you have walls of windows in full use for problem solving. By encouraging students to use the glass as writing surfaces, his students are engaging in a higher level of peer collaboration than ever before. ‘Mistakes’ are never permanent, which leads to a greater willingness to try things and play with equations.
Rob has not only noticed an impact on the way students learn his classroom, but also in the surrounding common spaces. At a time in their lives when self expression and autonomy become increasingly important, having a physical area to call their own has given our Middle Schoolers the freedom to explore how they engage with one another and learn. “It’s not just within the classroom that I’m seeing the positive impact of the West Wing on our Middle School students; the Academic Lounge outside my classroom has become a place where kids gather… it’s a place where they can be themselves.”
M IX ING A ND MASTERIN G , W I T H CON F I D EN C E It’s like a recipe – the right mix of ingredients, added at just the right time, made better with gut instinct and the confidence to know it’ll all turn out. But no, we’re not talking about culinary delights; it’s the musical stylings of our young DJs. Jason Cutbill is the Mix Master in charge (moonlighting from his day job as Upper School French Teacher). “Students are learning fast, but even more importantly, they’re putting themselves out there. With the new Middle School space in the West Wing, our Thursday morning sets really attract an audience. People are making requests, and there’s a lot of interaction. Our DJs are overcoming the fear of making mistakes in front of people and are building their confidence as they go.”
Vanda V-K (G8): “We’re learning that types of music go well together, and it’s even improving my pitch. We work in partners, so I’ve learned more about the give and take of working with someone else, as well as honing both my leadership and listening skills.”
Vera M (G8): “DJing has really helped me to be calm. When we’re performing in the Middle School in the mornings and kids around the booth are requesting songs, we’ve got to think fast. I’m a lot more comfortable in those situations and am much more confident.”
LOOKING AHEAD T H E NEW EAST WING The East Wing will be a spectacular Athletics and Performing Arts Centre that will house a double gym, viewing area, team rooms, dance studio, and choral rooms. On the top level, we will reinstate our fitness studio so that anyone using the exercise machines will be able to work out while enjoying a spectacular view of the Howe Sound and downtown Vancouver. As well, there will be a multi-purpose space off the main gyms that can be used for activities like yoga, fencing, and table tennis. We have not seriously invested in the spaces that house
our athletic and performing arts provisions, and these improvements are timely. Over the past several years, we have incorporated additional athletic co-curricular options to our Junior School students, and as they have taken advantage of them, we have grown the level of interest in team sports such as basketball, rugby, and soccer. As well, participation in our choir, band, dance and drama programmes has steadily increased, and we want to be able to provide offerings that will further enrich our students’ experiences. Claude Leduc, Director of Athletics, and Natassja By, Director of Performing Arts, have had a voice in the design of the East Wing, and they are looking forward to using these classrooms and spaces to truly inspire their athletes and artists to reach their personal best.
M A I N TA I N I N G ‘ M O ME N TU M ’ From our humble beginnings in a church parking lot to the beautiful campus that we have today, Mulgrave has always relied on the generosity of our parents to help create outstanding educational experiences for children. The completion of the West Wing is just one example of how the community came together to realise the vision of our Strategic Plan. As we move beyond our MPower campaign, we will begin work on ‘Momentum’, Mulgrave’s Annual Fund. Each year, we will raise money to further improve the quality of learning and teaching by providing the ‘extras’ that set a Mulgrave education apart.
